SONG INTERPRETATION

Reading ‘オレンジ’ by SPYAIR: Lyrics and Meaning

On happy days, the walk home feels unusually short. There is a desire to stay just a little longer, yet before long, one arrives at the parting point and waves goodbye as if nothing has changed. 「オレンジ」 holds within it the feeling of such an evening. The drive to keep moving forward and the reluctance to let this moment slip away flow together in a single song.

Wanting to stay a little longer simply means today was good.

In this song, regret does not sit on the opposite side of joy. It is precisely because the time spent laughing and striving together was so good that a sense of loss grows stronger as the end draws near. It feels like missing moments that have not yet been lost. While there are times when value is only recognized after it is gone, other days carry a feeling that they will be remembered for a long time, even while still in the middle of them.

While listening to this alongside "Haikyu!!" may evoke the atmosphere of a match, it does not require sports knowledge to resonate with its emotions. It can also encompass classrooms on the eve of graduation, final rehearsals, or evenings when collaborative efforts come to an end. Regardless of whether the outcome was successful, what remains is the fact that someone shared their heart in the same endeavor.

The warmth of the time spent together lingers on the empty court.

Why the オレンジ scenery isn't just sweet

Lyricist MOMIKEN explained in an Uta-net interview that the image of a street in the evening and saying hello to a friend came to mind first. The phrase capturing that scene became the song's title, which he also described as a graduation song at heart. Viewing オレンジ solely as a vibrant color misses this nuance, since bright light can also signal the end of the day.

Layering the taste of fruit onto this image makes the title feel even more vivid. Recalling joyful memories can bring a smile, yet the realization that one cannot return to exactly the same state adds a touch of bitterness. This does not turn the entire memory into sorrow; rather, it resembles the complex flavor of simultaneously accepting that those were good times and acknowledging that things must now change.

A faint bitterness lingers at the end of sweet memories.

Cheering that does not decide the next scene for you

One reason this song feels so warm is that it refuses to make easy assumptions about the future. MOMIKEN has explained that he left room for listeners to define the emotion following the repeated 'きっと'. Rather than having the supporter speak all the answers, it returns the choice to the person still living through that time.

On a second listen, pay attention to what the song holds back in moments that seem poised for a bold declaration of certainty. At first, there is a sense of wishing time would simply continue; as it progresses, a feeling emerges that one can move forward even while carrying regret. There may be no guarantee that happiness will repeat itself exactly as before, but the time spent together so far can serve as strength for what comes next. It is perfectly fine to receive the encouragement offered by オレンジ in this way.

Recalling the same evening, they head toward their respective tomorrows.

オレンジ — SPYAIR

"オレンジ" is the title track from the eponymous EP released on February 14, 2024, and serves as the theme song for "Haikyu!! The Dumpster Battle." MOMIKEN handled the lyrics, UZ composed the music, and UZ and tasuku arranged it, with YOSUKE providing vocals. MOMIKEN explains that the lyrics were written with the concept of connecting previous "Haikyu!!" songs. Listening to the New Versions of "イマジネーション," "アイム・ア・ビリーバー," and "One Day," which are also included on the EP, allows for a comparison of how the momentum of running forward shifts into a mindset that looks back on shared time.

The lyrics capture the passion of youth who refuse to give up and rise again, blending seamlessly with SPYAIR's signature refreshing rock sound. The song has also won a devoted following as an anthem.

Leaving a slight pause after the short, repeated phrases allows the desire for things not to end to come across more naturally.
